Spring Training...Practice

Well, after four straight losses our Colorado Avalanche make up for it by beating the 2008 Stanley Cup Champions, the Detroit Red Wings, on the road in a shootout, 6-5. The winning goal was scored by none other than Jordan Leopold, who happens to be from my home state of Minnesota. Yah Minnesota hockey! Oh, and yah Jordan, too! It was a pretty high-scoring, intense game, which, in this hockey fan's opinion, are the best to watch. And that leaves me optimistic for our team, even though they've had a rocky year, because it shows that our Colorado Avalanche roster is still putting their hearts into the way they play the game. The next game on the Colorado Avalanche schedule is at home on Tuesday night at the Pepsi Center versus the Ottawa Senators. Need some cheap Avalanche tickets for the game? They're still laying around, and since it's a Tuesday night game you'll probably be able to find some really good deals around town.

The Colorado Rockies roster has arrived in Florida for Spring Training. At least for the practices leading up to Spring Training. I'm pretty excited to see what happens throughout the next six weeks before the regular season kicks into high gear, especially with all of the off-season changes that were made to the Rockies roster. Hopefully I'll be able to get a quick update on the progress that they're making down there later on this week.

This weekend was the NBA All Star game. Actually, the game might still be going on, I didn't tune in to check it out. And despite the break for the Denver Nuggets schedule, I do want to add a note that they're still (seemingly) on their game and headed towards a probable NBA playoff run. Which would be super fabulous. They're currently in the middle of a six game road series, and have won eight of their last ten games. That's a pretty serious statistic for a team that was highly criticized early in the season for the last minute roster changes that took place in early November. Can't wait to see what the next week brings for this team!

Wow. What happened to the Denver Nuggets in New Jersey last night? Seriously, coming off of some really HUGE wins over the last few weeks, the Nuggets got SLAMMED by the Nets - 114 to 70. And the New Jersey Nets aren't even that good. I don't understand what went on there, but according to Denver Nuggets roster star Chauncey Billups, it's kind of something you have to expect a few times a year:

"To be honest with you, of course I wanted to win, but I'm not disappointed.
I've been in the league a long time, and you're going to have three or four of
these nights a year, on both sides. It's over with. Wash it off with the
shower."

Yeah, everyone has their off nights. And I can see how a couple of the guys having an off night could potentially rub off on the other players. And yes, we are still sitting in the number one spot in the division (woohoo!). But that's quite a loss for a team that is playoff material. I just hope that the guys are able to wash it off with the shower, cause this is not the kind of energy these guys want to have around if they really want to push it to the playoffs.

Next up on the Denver Nuggets schedule: the boys head to South Beach to take on the Miami Heat on Tuesday night. Send positive Denver vibes in that direction, por favor.

Who the heck is Nene?

Well, interestingly enough, Nene is not his real name. I mean it is, now. But it wasn't his original name. He was born Maybyner Rodney Hilario in Brazil, and legally had his name changed in 2003. Nene means baby in Portuguese (is that the official language of Brazil?) I wonder how much he loves the Denver winter weather over the sunny beaches of Rio.

Points-wise, this guy has been a huge asset to the Denver Nuggets this season. Compared to his stats last season, he seemingly came from the back of the pack to suddenly putting up super strong numbers. Now, you may have noticed that suddenly last January he wasn't appearing with the rest of the Denver Nuggets roster on the court - due to testicular cancer and a tumor that needed to be removed.

He's a big guy - 6'11 and 250 pounds. He holds his own on the court. His shoes are a size 17. And you know what they say about big shoes...big arm span. His is over 7'4. He does public service announcements for the United Nations. He gives back to his hometown community - hosting gospel events with his hometown pastor and sponsoring over fifty kiddie athletes in his home city. Seems like an all around good guy, with huge talent. Can't wait to get some Denver Nuggets tickets to watch him help bring the Denver Nuggets to the NBA Finals!

Right off the bat...who's ready for some FOOTBALL this weekend? I'll be chillin at my cousin's Superbowl party rooting for the Arizona Cardinals...mostly because I can't wait to be laying poolside in AZ for Spring Break. (since I have no real ties to either team, that's about what it came down to. Fancy schmancy, huh?)

Second...off the bat. Did anyone else have this high of expectations for the Denver Nuggets roster at the beginning of the season? Cause I gotta say that I sure as heck did NOT expect them to be this on their game this season. But they are sitting at the top of their conference in first place with a 29-15 record. Signing Chauncey Billups may have been the best move the Denver Nuggets have ever made. At least this season. Another surprise from the Denver Nuggets roster: Nene. He's four points away from beating Carmelo Anthony's career points total. Craziness. Look for a player profile on the young superstar in the making later this week. And speaking of Carmelo Anthony, while he hasn't quite caught up with his 'normal' season stats, he's definitely gotten back in the game. And possibly going to be picked for the NBA All Star Game.

Third on the list. I don't have a lot to say on the Colorado Avalanche - they're currently sitting on a 23-23-1 record, unimpressive - but I do have something interesting from the league. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman has decided to force players to sit out an extra regular season game if they sat out the All Star Game last weekend after being selected by the fans, in an effort to squash the don't-injure-my-best-players-in-an-inconsequential-game theory some teams take heading into the weekend. Important move by Bettman? I guess. There's been a lot of dwindling interest in the ASG over the past few years, so he's really just trying to push the game by keeping the best players on the ice. Best advice Bettman should take right now? Combine the ASG and the Winter Classic.

Fourth - Josh McDaniels, hottie and former offensive coordinator/QB coach for the New England Patriots, is the new head coach of the Denver Broncos. More on that later this week as well.

Fifth - Colorado Rockies Spring Training starts in less than a month...who is headed to the warm weather??

That's all for now. Now that I'm not working/traveling/holidaying like a crazy person I promise to be a better blogging fiend for all things Denver sports. At least I promise to try.

Lots-o-news since my last update.

First and foremost, our Denver Broncos schedule will be ending with the regular season. Sadly, the boys did not make it to the post season this year. Interestingly: Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan was fired after fourteen seasons with the team. While the search is still ongoing, New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo seems to be the front runner candidate to fill the open position. It sounds like this will be resolved sooner rather than later.

The Denver Nuggets are still sitting at the top of the division, their most recent win being Saturday night with a close game against the New Orleans Hornets. They had a little bit of a slump in December, but seem to be kicking off January with a bang, winning the last three games they've played. Oh, and Denver Nuggets roster member Carmelo Anthony seems to be finally getting his schtuff back together and actually scoring points again. He still has quite a bit of ground to make up from the beginning of the season, though, so hopefully his head is in the game for good.

On a side note, I'm really excited for Friday night's game against the Detroit Pistons. It's a huge game, not only for the team, but for the fans as well! If you're looking for cheap Nuggets tickets for the game, I found a site that has some really awesome prices. Check 'em out.

The Colorado Avalanche were on a roll in late December, I was super impressed. They even beat last year's Stanley Cup champion team, the Detroit Red Wings, at home at the Pepsi Center. I thought they were serious about winning. But now, they seem to have started up on another losing streak. They've given away their last three games, including tonight's game against the Minnesota Wild. Hopefully they didn't catch the Wild's bad luck (they've been on quite a losing streak lately as well), cause I would really like to see our Colorado Avalanche roster make it to the playoffs this year, and make it PAST the second round. And I think they could really do it if they truly put their hearts into it. And kept on a solid winning streak. C'mon boys!

Well, despite their long winning streak since aquiring Chauncey Billups, the Denver Nuggets have taken a downturn in their last three games. Losing to Phoenix, Cleveland and Houston, I'm sitting here wondering...what the heck is going on???

True, this does only put them at six losses in the past twenty-two games on the Denver Nuggets schedule. And their most recent game WAS against the Cleveland Cavaliers, who are ranked at the top of the league. But still.....three in a row. This seems strange, at least to this Nuggets fan.

What do all the Nuggets fans out there think??

Next home game: Monday night (yes folks, that's tomorrow night!) at home vs. the Portland Trailblazers. Think a change is in the tradewinds? Tell me what's on your mind.

Ok guys, I've been a little out of the loop lately. But I'm back to ~~black~~ blogging this week, and ready for some action. Sports action. Gosh. So little by little, day by day, by the end of the week, dagnabit, this blog will be updated with all of the goings on in the world of Denver sports. Today's topic? None other than my seemingly favorite subject, the Denver Broncos.

A week ago, Sunday December 7th to be exact, our Denver Broncos schedule kept the team at Invesco Field at Mile High to take on the Kansas City Chiefs. Luckily our boys didn't falter, kicking some major Chiefs booty and taking a win of 24-17. Kudos to the Denver Broncos roster! Ya'll deserve some {freshly baked} cookies for that win.

Yesterday, unfortunately, our Denver Broncos didn't fare quite as well. They played AT the Carolina Panthers, and all of the Denver Broncos fans out there (myself included) were subjected to a mightily devastating loss. A final score of 10-30, to be exact. Despite the loss, we're still sitting pretty in the runnings for the division title (knock on wood). A win this weekend when we play the Buffalo Bills would bode very well for this stellar team's chances of taking that title.

On a side note, this weekend's game is the last regular season home game of the year on the Denver Broncos schedule. I found a website that still has some pretty awesome Denver Broncos tickets online at really good prices. Gosh, I need to go to this game. Seriously, the NFL regular season is almost over? Where did the time go???

And just when you think they're going to tease you again this week and end things with another disappointing loss, the Denver Broncos give us all a very good surprise ending, and beat the New York Jets on their home turf with a final score of 34-17. Which tells us what? Well, for one thing, all those people out there calling Jay Cutler a young Brett Farve protege may be right. Or maybe Cutler is on his way to being even BETTER than Farve? He did, after all, stick it to Farve and the Jets this past weekend. And he DOES lead the league in passing yards. Crazy that our young hotshot quarterback, who's been so off and on lately with his play, is putting up those kind of statistics.

Next game? This Sunday, December 7th at Invesco Field, the Broncos will be taking on the Kansas City Chiefs, who are 2 and 10. Denver Broncos tickets are still available for the game, and prices are super cheap, there's never been a better time to be a football fan!

Whew! Carmelo Anthony is BACK. Not that he was ever really physically gone. But I've been a little concerned about him this season, because he really seemed to have gotten a little lost between the end of last season and the beginning of this one - and just not living up to his potential this season as of late. But worry no more, Denver Nuggets fans! The Denver Nuggets roster seems to be back in full force, with Anthony saving the day last night when the guys played in Los Angeles against the Los Angeles Clippers, scoring thirty points throughout the game. Now, hopefully he can keep that steam going throughout the rest of this season's Denver Nuggets schedule.

On a side note, has anyone ever been to the Staples Center for a Clippers game? If you've been there for an LA Lakers game, you've experienced a celebrity-trodden, packed house, hootin' and hollerin' good time. But if you compare that to a Clippers game...well, that's a sad sight in comparison. It's just interesting that the two teams play in the same league, in the same city, even in the same ARENA, and their respective fan bases are so completely different.

By the way, is anyone else as excited as I am to watch our Denver Broncos take on the New York Jets on Sunday?? Our superstar quarterback, Jay Cutler, has been compared to a young Brett Farve. I can't WAIT to see these two guys get rough on the turf. I would absolutely love to buy some Broncos tickets for this weekend, but flights are a little too spendy for this sports fan on the holiday weekend. So HDTV will have to do.

Wow, the Avs really can't seem to catch a break this year, can they? The Colorado Avalanche roster seems to be constantly plagued with injuries. Forward Darcy Tucker is now out for a month with a knee injury. Interesting that the team is actually classifying this as a knee injury, since they really only have to classify it as a lower body injury based on the new NHL policies on releasing injury information to the public. Although, I do have to say that with Tucker's past, this may just be a little bit of karma catching up with him. I'm not a huge fan of the guy, because he plays dirty. Don't get me wrong, I love it when the gloves come off and a fight breaks out on the ice (is that weird?), but he's the type of player that purposely goes after other players in areas (knee, ankle) that he knows they've been injured before. Gross.

On a side note, team captain Joe Sakic should be back on the ice soon, he's being re-evaluated this week. Which would definitely help to boost team morale, an all around good thing!

Hmmm...in light of all of the notes on how consistantly well the our Nuggets have been doing after the Denver Nuggets roster change and the beginning of the month (removing Allen Iverson in trade for Chauncey Billups), I thought it was high time we learned a little more about the NBA superstar. So here's what I've dug up on the subject:

>>He's originally from Denver. But we already knew that. I was just testing you on that one.

>>He played college ball at the University of Colorado, where his jersey (number four...) was retired upon his graduation.

>>He's played for a LOT of NBA teams. Beyond his (now two) stints on the Denver Nuggets roster, Billups has played for the Boston Celtics, Minnesota Timberwolves, Detroit Pistons, Orlando Magic and the Toronto Raptors.

>>Billups is married (wife: Piper...sorry ladies) with three young kids, all of whose names start with the letter "C". Awww, isn't that cute.

Weekend Update...Broncos Style

So after last week's surprising win, the Broncos took a surprising loss today at home to the Oakland Raiders. They're just full of surprises these days, eh? Today's was not necessarily a good surprise. And sadly (or not sadly, if you're an avid they-can-do-no-wrong Denver Broncos fan), they still have a shot at making the playoffs this season. What do you think? Do you think that a team that's had such a hot and cold season, played incredibly inconsistently and not won games that they have no excuse for losing deserves to make the playoffs? That's the question that's currently posed on the Denver Post's website. I'm not so sure that you can really decide if a team deserves to ever make the playoffs. Going to the playoffs isn't a right, it's just about which team plays the best in it's division. And if the Denver Broncos happen to be that top team, even if they're not really...well, great...this year, then they're the team that makes it. Even if that doesn't really say a lot about the way the way the team has played as a whole over the course of the season. I don't know, maybe I'm just ranting for the sake of ranting. I want to know what everyone else thinks! Tell me your thoughts...

Next up on the Denver Broncos schedule: playing IN New York at the New York Jets...hmmm, taking on NFL hottie Brett Farve, should be an interesting game...next Sunday.

On the home front...

>>TONIGHT the Colorado Avalanche played the Calgary Flames at home. Unfortunately the boys took a loss. It's been a tough couple of weeks for the boys on the Avalanche roster, they've really been plagued with injuries and illnesses, which doesn't really do much for the morale of the team. Hopefully team captain Joe Sakic will be back on the ice soon, and get the guys pumped back up to win some games!!

>>This SUNDAY the Denver Broncos play the Oakland Raiders at home at 2:00 PM. Last weekend our Broncos somehow managed a win (against all odds...not to be a fickle fan, or anything...), so maybe by some miracle they'll step up their game again this weekend. Maybe? Maybe?

>>Holy crap. The Denver Nuggets have really been sticking to their guns, they're now at a whopping 7-1 record since they traded former Denver Nuggets roster star Allen Iverson for Chauncey Billups. Who is Jay Cutler, Anyway?

Well, he's quite a bit cuter than his profile picture on the Denver Broncos roster depicts, for one. Two, Jay Cutler attended Vanderbilt University, so we know that he's an educated quarterback, if nothing else (haha, but there is something else, he's good. Really good. Just throwing that out there). He must be a Christmas lover. Want to know why? He was born in a town called "Santa Claus". No joke. He's been the Denver Broncos starter for two years now (this being his second season), and holds the number ten spot for number of passing yards in the entire NHL. He's pretty philanthropic, too: his foundation works towards helping at-risk kids graduate from high school, and after being diagnosed with type one Diabetes last year, he has become quite involved with a local diabetes group to promote awareness of the disease. He's definitely helping Denver Broncos tickets sell and filling up Invesco Field at Mile High. Oh, and don't confuse him with Jay Cutler the bodybuilder (that guy kind of creeps me out). Yay Jay, hopefully he can help pull us into the post-season!

The Broncos Win My Support

Despite an injury-stricken Denver Broncos roster, the guys somehow pulled out a win this afternoon when they played against the Atlanta Falcons in Georgia! With a hodge-podge list of players, some playing positions the fans definitely would not have expected, the Broncos beat the Falcons with a final score of 24-20. Jay Cutler is again proving himself to be a superstar with his playmaking abilities, he made a 216-yard effort in today's game, leading our Denver Broncos to victory! Our Denver Broncos play at home next Sunday against the Oakland Raiders. Denver Broncos tickets are still available for next weekend's game, get 'em while they're hot!

Denver Nuggets Take Off

Well, well, well. The Denver Nuggets really seem to be hitting their stride with the Denver Nuggets roster change trading Allen Iverson for Denver native Chauncey Billups. Last night the Nuggets smashed Kevin Garnett and the Boston Celtics, winning the game with a score of 94-85. The NBA team's record since the team aquired the young star? Four and one. Looks like we definitely got the better end of this deal! Want to see the team that everyone's talking about? Then you should really get your stuff together and buy Denver Nuggets tickets now, before they're totally sold out!

In other local sporting news...the Colorado Avalanche have definitely been off of their game lately. They've been struggling through an injury and illness stricken Colorado Avalanche roster, and the poor play that we've all been seeing on the ice has left the boys in dire need of a confidence boost. Turning it around? None other than our seemingly quite talented man-in-goal, Peter Budaj. He's holding a .983 average, at least from the last two games, which is hopefully a good sign of things to come for the team! And I have some even BETTER news for all of the Colorado Avalanche fans out there. Colorado Avalanche tickets are priced super low right now, which is great for keeping your wallet happy while you enjoy a super fun night out on the town!

Our Denver Broncos play at the Georgiadome tomorrow against the Atlanta Falcons at noon. Boy oh boy, do we need a win! The Denver Broncos roster is yet another example of Colorado teams currently plagued by injuries and illnesses. Hopefully this is something they'll be able to overcome, and quickly, before any chance of making the NFL playoffs is out of reach this year. Good luck to them tomorrow!

Woe is the Colorado Avalanche

The Colorado Avalanche really need to get healthy! They're currently on a five game losing streak, and it seems that without captain Joe Sakic's leadership both on and off the ice, they're struggling quite a bit. The problem seems to be coming from the team getting off to a slow start...perhaps they need to do some team building exercises to get rid of the cobwebs or something. You know - like the ropes courses and trust games and things? C'mon guys! They were on such a roll at the end of last season, I just don't understand where that get-up-and-go went!

Perhaps they need a little bit more fan support. Let the boys know that the fans are behind them. Give 'em a little confidence for the rest of the games on the Colorado Avalanche schedule. Best way to do that? Buy Colorado Avalanche tickets and go check out a game or two. The prices online are pretty good - although I do think they'll start going up as soon as our Avs are off of this losing streak! Which will be soon. I can just feel it.

Chauncey Billups

The Denver Nuggets roster made quite the trade on Monday of this week, sending veteran player Allen Iverson to the Detroit Pistons in exchange for Colorado native Chauncey Billups. Billups will receive his physical today, and be ready for playing the rest of the games on the Denver Nuggets schedule with the team tomorrow. I'm so excited to have a local guy on the team, and it seems like many Nuggets fans are having the same reaction to the news. I don't know about you, but I'm going to have to get my hands on some Denver Nuggets tickets soon! Perhaps some new blood is just what the team needs to move into the NBA Finals this year!

Win for Obama in Colorado

Not really sports-related, but since this is going to affect all of us anyway, I thought it was noteworthy. It was actually a really close race, the popular vote in our great state leaving Barack Obama receiving 1,105,693 votes and John McCain 963,318 votes. We'll see what kind of changes start happening in the new year with a new president.

Colorado Sports Scene

Colorado Avalanche: They're on a five game winning streak, and goalie Peter Budaj was named one of the NHL's three stars of the week. Pretty good start for the season, especially for a team that was swept in the second round of the playoffs last year.

Denver Broncos: The boys were on the "bye" week this past weekend, and with their sorry performance the week before, I hope they really got their rears in gear for the Broncos vs. Dolphins game this weekend at Invesco Field at Mile High.

The Colorado State University Rams will be taking on the Brigham-Young University Cougars, and the Colorado University Buffalo play the Texas A&M Aggies. Both are big games, with important outcomes. I can't wait to see how these play out, although I might have to put the CSU game on TiVo, because I really want to go out and actually watch the CU game.

Unfortunately, the Denver University Pioneers hockey team lost to the Ohio State Buckeyes this past weekend, pushing them out of possibly taking over the number one spot in the conference when they play the currently number one ranked Colorado College Tigers in a very highly anticipated - and rivalry intense - series Halloween weekend. I have a feeling that it's going to be a very interesting year in Colorado college hockey.

Sports Wrap

Hey all! Here's what's going on in the world of Denver sports...

The Colorado Avalanche are the highest scoring NHL team so far this season. They score so much that their nets are falling apart - literally! One of the goal nets finally ripped apart at the Av's practice on Wednesday. Glad to see that the boys are getting the puck in the net, we're going to need as many goals as we can get to make it to the playoffs this year.

Speaking of hockey, the Denver Broncos roster seems to be getting bogged down by an injury more commonly found in the NHL: groin injuries. Tony Scheffler, Selvin Young, Ebenezer Ekuban, Brandon Marshall and Champ Bailey are all suffering from groin injuries this week. Tough luck, guys. Must be the gatorade.

The Denver Nuggets roster is shrinking as they get closer to the home opener. The NBA team cut newbies and veterans alike, removing Nick Fazekas, Ruben Patterson, Smush Parker, Mateen Cleaves and James Mays from their Nuggets roster spots, reducing their team to fourteen players.
